"Oppens has always excelled in densely packed music that would make most pianists cower...she applied equal amounts of energy and subtlety, finding the muscle and poetic heart in the music even as she sailed nimbly through the keyboard extremities."

Pianist Ursula Oppens is one of the most respected figures in 20th century American music and the muse for many composers whose works she has given their world premieres.  The People United Will Never Be Defeated is a crowning achievement of her work as a commissioner of new music, fully worthy to sit alongside the Bach Goldberg and Beethoven Diabelli as epic masterpieces for the piano.

This season’s inDepth mini-series explores three epic sets of variations for the piano, starting with Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and continuing with works by Beethoven and Rzewski in February and March.  Designed to transform the normal concert experience, each inDepth concert starts with an introduction to a featured masterpiece, continues with a complete concert performance, and concludes with an informal talk-back conversation with the artist and a reception.
