Schubert: Octet in F major, D. 803

Making its first appearance on a CMSD series, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields has mounted tours of this rarely-heard late Schubert masterpiece to great international acclaim. The unique combination of clarinet, bassoon, French horn, string bass and traditional string quartet produces a depth of tonal possibility associated with a symphony orchestra, but with the intimacy of a small chamber ensemble.
The entire program is devoted to this single, large-scale work.

In a Signature Series first, we will experience Schubert’s Octet in the CMSD’s innovative “inDepth” format: first, a deep-dive introduction to the work by the artists themselves; then a brief pause followed by a full concert performance; and finally, a conversation between the artists and the audience facilitated by writer and former Detroit Free Press music critic Mark Stryker. Quite unlike any other musical experience, an “inDepth” concert will leave you more deeply engaged with this great music than ever before.
