Schulhoff: Five Pieces for String Quartet
Schubert: String Quartet in D minor, D. 810, "Death and the Maiden"
The 2018 Cleveland Quartet Award-winning Rolston String Quartet will make their CMSD debut performing two beloved favorites of the quartet repertoire, Mozart’s “Dissonance” Quartet and Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet. Completing the program is a neo-Baroque dance suite by early 20th-century Czech-born composer Erwin Schulhoff.
Canada’s Rolston String Quartet, in addition to becoming the most recent recipient of the Cleveland Quartet Award, also earned First Prize at the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition. That same year, they won Astral’s National Auditions, Grand Prize at the Yellow Springs Competition, and top prizes at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the inaugural M-Prize competition. Small wonder that they were named among CBC Radio’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30” in 2016!
On the heels of their Banff win, Rolston String Quartet toured Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada, and United States. Other recent and upcoming highlights include performances at the Kennedy Center, Esterhazy Palace, Carnegie Hall, the Freer Gallery, Wigmore Hall, two major tours in Canada and three European tours. The Rolston String Quartet began their two-year term as the Yale School of Music’s fellowship quartet-in-residence in the fall of 2017.
